While a lot of the future soul crowd has been (rightfully) mourning the death of Slum Village MC Baatin, another afrofuturistic luminary passed over the weekend.
Charles Huntley Nelson was a visual artist, experimental film director and proffessor at Morehouse in ATL. His video mashups and visual art combined a fascination with tech with his interests in human identity. Mutropolis mashes the film Metropolis together with Amistad as Nelson’s way of visually representing the larger Afrofuturist ideology and as a way to reclaim the idea of the future being a place of unlimited possibilities. Similar to DJ Spooky’s Rebirth of a Nation.
